KUANTAN, Pahang - The flood situation in Pahang has worsened and the number of people evacuated here and in Pekan has increased to 805 as at 6pm yesterday.

This is almost double the number of evacuees in the two districts in the morning.

A total 545 people from 153 families here were seeking shelter at five relief centres.

These are at Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan (SMK) Pandan, SMK Gudang Rasau, Pusat Bina Insan Jaya Gading, Sri Damai community hall and Panching community hall.

The evacuees were from Kampung Paya Panching, Kampung Batu 6, Kampung Seri Damai, Kampung Pandan 2, Kampung Chendering and Jaya Gading.

Sixteen people who sought shelter at Sungai Lembing police station on Thursday were allowed to return home when the floods in the area subsided yesterday.

In Pekan, 260 people from 70 families in Kampung Chenderawasih were relocated to Sekolah Kebangsaan Sinar Mutiara in Sungai Miang.

State police flood operations centre spokesman said several roads were closed to all vehicles yesterday.

These were between Km30 and Km36 of Jalan Kuantan-Sungai Lembing, Jalan Kampung Kolek, Km28 near Jambatan Sungai Charu and between Km20 and Km 21 of Jalan Pekan-Nenasi.

State Civil Defence Department director Colonel Che Othman Hussin said 43,326 workers and volunteers were on stand by to help victims if the situation worsened.

Meanwhile, the Meteorological Department said intermittent rain, occasionally heavy, occurring over Pahang, Terengganu and Johor was expected to continue until tomorrow and the condition would cause floods in low-lying areas.
