Ten fully equipped ambulances and emergency equipments were granted by the French Government to the Lebanese civil defense centers, in collaboration with the civil defense and the United Nations Development Programme.
The ceremony took place on Friday the 27th of March at the civil defense center in Tehwita - Beirut, under the patronage and in the presence of H.E. Me Ziad Baroud, Minister of Interior and Municipalities.H.E the French Ambassador Mr. Andre Parrant, the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Resident Representative Ms. Marta Ruedas, the Director-General of the Lebanese Civil Defense General Darwish Hobeika and a number of civil defense and UN Staff participated in the ceremony.
The "supporting the civil defense" project is funded by the French Government through a 2 million Euros grant, in order to purchase tools and equipments and to provide the necessary training for the civil defense system in close cooperation with the ministry of Interior and Municipalities.In his speech, H.E Me Baroud stated that the civil defense is the victim of injustice and needs to be a priority supported by the government.
After thanking the donors for their collaboration, Minister Baroud, insisted that some internal measures should be taken improve the operational system of the civil defense."This project, implemented by UNDP, is an important and necessary step to develop the capacity and the daily work of the civil defense, said Ms. Ruedas.
"Two hundred members of the Civil Defense were trained so far, and more than 350 employees and volunteers from the Civil Defense will continue this training during 2009"H.E Ambassador Parrant, ensured that the second phase of the project will include training on the rubble removal done by French specialists.It is worth mentioning that Minister Baroud, Ambassador Parrant and Ms. Ruedas received shield honorary from General Darwish Hobeika.
